Jaguar for showing me my shadow
Hummingbird for showing me the sweetness of life
And eagle for showing me perspective and for heightening my vision”
In my energy medicine training with The Fourwinds, Alberto Villoldo invited us to work closely with our animal spirit guides. These animals are representative of different states of consciousness through which we must pass in order to evolve into the highest version of what it means to be human.
This can be challenging for the western mind to grasp, because as westerners we are not taught to ‘see’ through the eyes of these animal archetypes. If you struggle to work directly with your animal spirit guides you can think in terms of western physiology and psychology.
Serpent, guardian of the South, represents our physical bodies, our stories, our past.
Jaguar, guardian of the West, represents our shadow self, that which is largely unconscious yet has a powerful impact on our freedom and sense of safety in the world. Jaguar, also represents our nervous system and whether or not this is in hyper vigilance or is calm and secure.
Hummingbird, guardian of the North, represents our ability to take our hero’s journey and taste the sweet nectar of life.
Finally, Eagle, guardian of the East, represents our ability to soar high, with very little effort, to have a vision which holds the big picture without missing the details.
Each stage or animal spirit must be known and integrated in order to move to the next level of self-awareness.
Over the years I have come to deeply value this ‘way of seeing’, in minutes I can gauge where it is I am responding to my life from and make the necessary shifts in consciousness to allow me to gain the highest perspective. This has been a powerful self-awareness practice. It has also made me realise that I am/we are empowered to higher and lesser degrees in different areas of our lives. In some areas we operate from eagle and others from serpent or hummingbird. I have also learnt that the eyes of different animal spirits are necessary in different situations I have found myself in.
